Tarragona, Catalan Rome
Tarragona was Roman Hispania's capital and shows it: an amphitheater over the sea, a circus beneath the streets and walls wrapping a medieval city set into ancient stone.

Getting there
Commuter and regional trains from Sants in about an hour. The city is compact: station to old town is a fifteen-minute uphill walk.
The Roman circuit
Amphitheater, praetorium and circus, the wall and the aqueduct on the edge — the Devil's Bridge deserves the stop by car or bus. The Roman-era beach walk closes the day with a swim.
The Costa Dorada bonus
The beaches south of Tarragona are wide and family-friendly, and the big theme park is a stone's throw if you travel with children who've seen enough Rome. Return trains to Barcelona run frequently into the night.
