Montserrat, the holy mountain

Montserrat is the excursion par excellence: a saw-toothed ridge with a thousand-year monastery hanging on the slope, one hour from Plaça Espanya plus a rack railway or cable car.

Getting there on your own

Commuter train from Plaça Espanya to Monistrol or Aeri, then rack railway or cable car up to the monastery: the railway company sells the combined ticket covering the whole journey.

What to do up top

The basilica and the Black Madonna with its pilgrim queue, the hermitage funiculars and the signed paths between rock needles. L'Escolania, the boys' choir, sings at set hours on school days.

The honest trails

From the Sant Joan funicular to the summit it's forty minutes of real path with the whole plain below: mountain footwear and water. The low routes to Sant Miquel are the soft version with the same views.
