Girona, the complete medieval

Girona is Catalonia's best-kept medieval city: an intact Jewish call, walkable walls, colored houses over the river and a cathedral with the widest Gothic nave in the world.

Getting there

The fast train from Sants arrives in just over an hour and the regional in about two, with matching prices. The station is a ten-minute walk from the old town: you need nothing but shoes.

The essential circuit

Cathedral and its staircase, the Jewish call and its interpretation center, the wall walk with the city below and the Onyar houses from the bridges. One full day, and tight.

The sweet detail

Girona is a serious-food city of crema ice cream — the local custard gives its name to a hundred display cases. Book if you want the famous tables; otherwise the old town is full of honest surprises.
