Sitges, the charming sea

Sitges is the easiest sea escape: white houses, three beaches, arty lanes and a promenade that smells of salt. The commuter train reaches it in three-quarters of an hour from Sants or Passeig de Gràcia.

The typical day

Mid-morning train, walk from the cemetery to the old town, beach with a beach bar and fish on a terrace. The return at sunset has Sitges' best profile: the church over the sea.

Beaches for everyone

The big beach by the promenade is family-friendly and easy; the coves at the eastern end are quieter and some are gay-friendly by tradition — Sitges is open on every front.

When to go and when not

April to June and September are perfect; August fills to the flagpoles and February's Carnival transforms it. Easter week processes in earnest: check dates before seeking calm.
